Why shoes?

posted on: Saturday, 24 April 2010

I was one of those girls who, as a child, would get a new pair of shiny mary-janes and would go to sleep with them, pretty much, on my pillow. Shoes and I? We have always been close as close can be. Nothing like new shoes.

Not much has changed now that I am grown - still love shiny shoes, still keep them in my sight when they are brand new; you know, just loitering around the bedroom in case I need to catch a glimpse. I have many - far too many I'm sure. I did toy with the idea of getting all of my shoes out and taking a photo, just to see the scale things, but then I thought better of it. Did I need to provide my husband/conscience with photographic evidence of my addiction the next time we have one of those 'stop shopping' talks?

However this makes it sound as if all I do is buy shoes and really, honestly I don't. I am a very selective shoe shopper (the same can be said for handbags; still having the guilt sweats over last week's frivolous red, patent, boutique purchase). I covet shoes. I lust after them. I have them feature in mini-movies in my mind's eye, where they guest-star with certain outfits. Shoes are the best supporting actress.

In reality, with my lifestyle, I live in flats - ballet shoes in summer and riding-style boots in winter. But that doesn't stop the adoration for others of a more exotic variety. And at work, especially if I have a big meeting, I will bring out the heels. I am constantly on the look-out for the perfect pair of red ballet shoes, the perfect brown boot, the perfect incandescent strappy heel, the perfect black court and so it goes...

So when there are no shoes...I get shoe blues... ;-)

  4. Shoes shoes shoes - love them! I use to live in flats a bit too much and I am getting more into heels. Although wish I had packed a pair of pumps in my handbag last night I wore my beautiful black shoe boots dancing and I think I have finally learnt my lesson they are not built for clubbing...

  5. Hi you're absolutely right about the shoe / childhood thing. I still have some red patent numbers I had around three so it is an obsession formed early. I just bought my three Converse - which I also wear and white Superga plimsolls which I have bought every Summer since I can remember for the entire family. We have a slight mini me thing going on but I think we all look super - it's amazing how dinky those little Superga plimsolls are in my daughter's size. Love the photos ! xx

  6. Well I am sure you know about my shoe obsession from my Sparkly Louboutin post :) I think people like us who love shoes are just attracted to beautiful pieces of work and tihngs that make us feel beautiful because for me, that's what shoes do!! Take a pic of them all and be proud girlfriend! :)

  7. Like you, I've been shoe obsessed from a very young age (lots of photos of me in mummy's shoes as soon as I could walk. There's a cliché isn't there, that women like shoes as they are generally the only thing they can fit into, even if they are having a "fat" day. The worst thing to me about having children was having to wear so many more sensible flats for purely practical reasons. However, I appear to have passed on my love to both my daughters, who are both showing the signs of shoe obsession! (mind you, their father is just as bad...)

  10. Dear Louise, great to have found your beautiful blog via the wonderful Tania at Backwards in High Heels. I too cannot resist a fabulous pair of shoes, I have the opposite problem in that I have barely anything that is sensible few sensible. I'm making an effort to be more practical! xx
